Duke vs. Tennessee Gameday Guide: Tip Time, K-Ville Rules and What to Watch
Duke MBB host Tennessee on Oct. 20.
Game Details
Duke hosts Tennessee on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The preseason exhibition is a designated big game and a preseason top-10 matchup, with Duke ranked No. 2 and Tennessee No. 7. The broadcast has been listed on ACC Network, but confirm the channel before tip.
It’s also a rare visit. Tennessee hasn’t played at Cameron since 1975, and Duke won last year’s exhibition meeting in Knoxville, 83-76.
K-Ville Line-Up Schedule
K-Ville, short for Krzyzewskiville, is the tent city where Duke undergraduates camp outside Cameron Indoor Stadium to get seats for big basketball games. It’s named after longtime Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski (“Coach K”).
How it works: Students form groups, register them with line monitors, and take turns staying in tents or the line so someone is always there. Groups that stay in line get into Cameron first, and the rest are admitted from the “Tip-Off Line.” That’s why the Tennessee game has attendance rules, such as one-third of a group present when registering and everyone present by 5 p.m. on game day.
The tradition: It’s strongest for the biggest games, especially the North Carolina rivalry, when students can camp for weeks. For high-profile games like this one, the school permits tents and other structures, which is what the “structures are permitted” rule refers to.
Cameron’s student section, the Cameron Crazies, is famous for its noise, and K-Ville is how they secure those front-row seats.
Student groups should plan around the following rules.
Monday, Oct. 19
- 7:00 a.m.: The registration line opens at the line monitor (LM) table by the K-Ville sign. Lining up before 7 a.m. is unofficial and not overseen by the LMs.
- 8:00 a.m.: In-person registration closes for the day and online registration opens. To register a new group after 8 a.m., submit the form that group VPGs send to the Listserv and GroupMe on Oct. 19. One-third of the group must be present in K-Ville when registering and at all times afterward.
- 11:59 p.m.: Online registration closes. No new groups can register between midnight and 7 a.m. Tuesday.
- Overnight: Checks will be called throughout the night for registered groups, weather permitting.
- Structures are permitted, since it’s a designated big game.
Tuesday, Oct. 20
- 7:00 a.m.: In-person registration resumes at the LM table near the K-Ville sign.
- 5:00 p.m.: Registration closes and line-up begins. All group members must be present in K-Ville. The Tip-Off Line opens on the sidewalk by Card Lot.
- 5:30 p.m.: Undergraduate doors open. Registered groups enter Cameron first, followed by students in the Tip-Off Line.
- 7:00 p.m.: Undergraduate doors and the Tip-Off Line close, and the game tips.
Tip for students: The one-third and all-members rules are the most likely to cost a group its spot, so check attendance carefully.
Duke’s Lineup Picture
Caleb Foster is expected to miss the game with an ankle injury, based on earlier reporting, though I haven’t seen a pregame confirmation. That puts more weight on Cayden Boozer and freshman Deron Rippey Jr. in the backcourt.
My projected starting five, based on the Belmont scrimmage, is Boozer, John Blackwell, Dame Sarr, Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje and Patrick Ngongba II. Jon Scheyer has said his lineup is still open, so treat this as an educated guess.
What to Watch
- Boumtje Boumtje vs. real size. After scoring 19 points against Belmont, the 7-foot-2 freshman faces Tennessee’s 6-foot-10 bigs.
- Backcourt without Foster. Whether Blackwell shares playmaking duties will be a key question.
- Discipline. Duke committed 21 fouls against Belmont, and Tennessee is more physical.
- Rotations. Scheyer used a 10-player rotation against Belmont and is likely to keep experimenting.
- Tennessee’s offense. The Vols brought in one of the country’s top portal classes and could test Duke’s defense, which held Belmont to 34.5% shooting.
What’s Next
Duke plays at Kansas on Sunday, Oct. 25 (noon CT, ESPN), then opens the regular season at home against Army on Nov. 2.
Bottom Line
For fans, the key is logistics: arrive early, register correctly and be in K-Ville by 5 p.m. For the team, it’s an early check on how a young, deep roster handles a physical opponent without one of its veteran guards.
