South Carolina has officially entered the picture for one of the most coveted prospects in the country, as five-star point guard Jezelle “GG” Banks confirmed the Gamecocks as the newest program to join her recruitment.

A recruitment that just got more crowded

Banks already had a heavyweight group pursuing her before South Carolina’s addition, and the timing here matters. Landing in the mix for a five-star point guard at this stage of the process is a notable statement for a program looking to keep building momentum on the recruiting trail — but it also means Beamer’s staff, or more likely the women’s basketball staff, is walking into a race where other schools already have a head start.

Official visits already locked in

Banks currently has official visits scheduled with both Texas and LSU — two programs with the resources, tradition and roster continuity to make an immediate, tangible pitch. Official visits represent a serious stage of any recruitment; they’re typically reserved for the schools a prospect has already narrowed her focus to, which suggests both Texas and LSU are further along in building a real relationship with Banks than programs just entering the picture.

South Carolina and Ohio State playing catch-up

South Carolina isn’t alone in trying to close that gap. Ohio State is in a similar position, with both programs currently working to lock in their own visit dates rather than having them already scheduled. That distinction is worth paying attention to as this recruitment develops — a scheduled visit is a concrete commitment of a prospect’s time and attention, while a visit still “in the process of adding dates” is a step behind, dependent on continued communication and interest actually converting into action.

What this means going forward

For a prospect of Banks’ caliber — a five-star point guard is about as premium a recruiting target as college basketball offers — this kind of drawn-out, multi-school recruitment is fairly typical. What will be worth tracking next is whether South Carolina can actually convert its newfound interest into a scheduled official visit, and if so, how that visit compares in timing and impression to the ones Texas and LSU have already banked. Late entrants into major recruitments do win prospects, but it usually requires a standout in-person pitch to make up the ground that early movers have already established. For now, South Carolina’s inclusion is a positive signal of interest — the real test comes once an actual visit date is on the calendar.
