Former South Carolina guard Lindsey Spann Pough has been promoted to assistant coach and assistant general manager on Brenda Frese’s Maryland women’s basketball staff. The move comes just before the Terrapins open their season against her old team in Paris.

A Gamecock on the court and on the bench

Pough, then known as Lindsey Spann, joined South Carolina as a player in 2017. Dawn Staley announced that the Laurel, Md., native and Penn State graduate had signed to play for the Gamecocks, with one year of eligibility in 2017-18. Staley said at the time that she was “incredibly excited and fortunate” to add her, praising the scoring and playmaking she would bring to the backcourt.

Her time with the program continued after her playing days. She spent 2018-19 as a graduate assistant under Staley while finishing her master’s degree in sport and entertainment management. That season set her on the path into coaching.

From Penn State standout to Maryland rising star

Before South Carolina, Pough had a strong career at Penn State. She averaged 12.3 points for the Lady Lions and finished eighth in school history with 143 career 3-pointers.

Maryland, about 10 miles from her hometown, hired her in 2019. She spent a year as Director of Recruiting Operations before moving to the bench as an assistant coach in spring 2020. Frese called her “an up and coming star in our profession.” The WBCA named her to its Thirty Under 30 list in 2021, and Silver Waves Media ranked her among the most impactful assistant coaches in women’s basketball in 2022. Most recently, she was listed on Maryland’s 2025-26 staff as Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator. Pough is her married name. Her Maryland bio lists her as married to Keith Pough.

A homecoming in Paris

The promotion lands just before a game with extra meaning for her. South Carolina and Maryland meet Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, at Adidas Arena in Paris, as part of the Oui Play doubleheader. The game is the Gamecocks’ season opener, and North Carolina and Oklahoma play in the other game. Pough will be on the Maryland bench against the program where she played and began her coaching career.

What’s next

Her new title adds front-office responsibility to her coaching and recruiting work. Maryland hasn’t publicly detailed the new duties, so I can’t say how the role will change her day-to-day work. She won’t have long to settle in before the Terrapins face the program where her career started.
