Johnson hasn’t announced yet. She’s down to South Carolina and LSU, and her decision is set for Oct. 21, so this is a scenario piece, not a report of a commitment.

The Roster Impact

A Johnson commitment would address South Carolina’s biggest long-term gap. Earlier reporting shows Staley’s 15-player roster has eight forwards but no true center, and Chloe Kitts and Ashlyn Watkins leave after this season. Joyce Edwards and Adhel Tac would be seniors in 2027-28.

Johnson, a 6-foot-4 center from Biloxi, Mississippi, ranked in the top 20 of her class, would arrive as the anchor. Combined with GG Banks and Taylor Brown, the 2027 class would cover point guard, guard depth and the post. The catch is space: Staley usually carries 12-13 players, so Johnson would take one of the few remaining openings and likely end the chase for other targets.

Is Staley Beating Mulkey?

On the court, the record is lopsided. According to reports that after South Carolina’s 79-72 win at LSU on Feb. 14, the Gamecocks had won 18 straight games against LSU, a streak dating back 14 years. The season log shows another win over LSU in the SEC Tournament semifinals, 83-77, which would extend the streak by one if it counts. South Carolina finished 2025-26 at 36-4 and second in the final AP poll.

In recruiting and the portal, it’s more mixed:

  • Banks picked South Carolina over LSU and Texas.
  • Jordan Lee left Texas for Columbia, and ESPN’s Charlie Creme ranked her sixth among portal additions.
  • LSU’s portal story is messier. Four players entered in April, and I found no confirmation that all of them returned.
  • But Mulkey has wins too: Fulwiley transferred from South Carolina to LSU in 2025. And South Carolina lost the 2026 title game to UCLA, so “beating Mulkey” doesn’t mean beating everyone.

Analysis: Staley is clearly winning the head-to-head on both the court and the trail lately, but calling it a sweep would overstate things.

Why Players Choose Staley

  1. Honesty. Banks said the staff “recruited me as a person” and was candid about what it takes to reach her goals. Staley’s own pitch: “everybody’s good on the good days,” so choose the people who help on the bad days.
  2. A professional pipeline. Lee’s decision rested partly on South Carolina having 13 players on WNBA rosters, second-most of any college program, with a “Pro” theme this season.
  3. Early relationships. Associate head coach Jolette Law is credited with identifying players years early, and Banks named her with Staley. Johnson announced her own offer after “an amazing conversation” with Staley.
  4. Titles and tradition. Lee cited three national championships in the last 10 years.
  5. Development over hype. Former LSU star Alexis Morris publicly argued Staley’s program is about development and preparing players for the next level, though that’s one person’s opinion.

If She Goes to LSU Instead

LSU would pair Johnson with Caroline Bradley, giving Mulkey a formidable frontcourt for 2027 and a response to losing Banks. South Carolina would still hold Banks and Brown, but would need another post plan.

Outlook

If Johnson commits to Columbia, Staley’s 2027 class could be among the nation’s best, with each piece filling a defined role. The real test is turning that depth into a national title, which has slipped away the last two Aprils.
