South Carolina’s backcourt will officially move forward without Maddy McDaniel, as head coach Dawn Staley announced that the rising junior has withdrawn from the University and will not return to the Gamecocks program.

McDaniel had previously revealed on Instagram that she was stepping away from the team to prioritize her mental and emotional well-being. The latest announcement confirms that her time in Columbia has come to an end, closing a chapter that included meaningful contributions to one of the nation’s premier women’s basketball programs.

While McDaniel’s departure creates another change for South Carolina’s roster, the program has made it clear that its support for the guard extends beyond basketball. Staley emphasized that the decision has been met with understanding from the very beginning and that the relationship between McDaniel and the Gamecocks remains strong.

“We respected Maddy’s decision in July, and we continue to do that in this next step,” Staley said. “She has been a valued part of our program’s success, and she and her family will always be part of our Gamecock family. We wish her all the best as she chooses her future moves on and off the basketball court.”

McDaniel’s exit leaves South Carolina with another adjustment to make in its backcourt rotation heading into the new season. The Gamecocks now face the challenge of redistributing ball-handling and playmaking responsibilities, with several players expected to compete for an expanded role at point guard.

Although McDaniel’s collegiate future will continue elsewhere—or potentially outside of basketball for the time being—South Carolina’s response reflects the program’s long-standing emphasis on supporting student-athletes as people first. Staley’s message underscored that, despite McDaniel’s departure from the roster, she remains a valued member of the Gamecock family, and the program wishes her success in whatever path she chooses next.
