South Carolina Football: Shane Beamer Shares Emotional Update on Offensive Lineman Dayne Arnett
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks had an important member of their football family on their minds during Saturday’s matchup against Oklahoma.
Fifth-year offensive lineman Dayne Arnett was unavailable for the contest after dealing with an undisclosed health issue that required hospitalization earlier in the week. Beamer revealed the situation during a television interview, offering an emotional message of support for the veteran lineman.
The coach made it clear that Arnett’s health was the priority and that the entire program was thinking about him while he remained away from the team.
“Dayne Arnett, one of our offensive linemen, he’s been battling some health things this week in the hospital for a couple days. We’re thinking of you, Dayne, and we love you, man. We miss you,” Beamer said during an interview on SEC Network after the first quarter.
The message provided some insight into why Arnett was missing from the lineup, although the specific nature of his illness was not disclosed.
Arnett’s Journey to South Carolina
Arnett joined the Gamecocks in January after transferring from Ferris State, a Division II national champion program.
Before arriving in Columbia, he built considerable experience at Ferris State, appearing in 33 games during his time with the program. His experience and versatility offered South Carolina another option along the offensive line as the team prepared for the season.
Arnett initially played a meaningful role in the Gamecocks’ rotation. He logged 136 snaps across the first three games, demonstrating his involvement in the offensive line group.
His playing time subsequently declined, however. He recorded just six offensive snaps against Alabama and eight against Florida. Despite the reduction in offensive opportunities, he continued contributing on special teams, appearing in that capacity throughout the season, including the previous week’s game against Tennessee.
His absence against Oklahoma was therefore another setback for South Carolina’s offensive line depth.
Seven Gamecocks Listed as Out Against Oklahoma
Arnett was among seven South Carolina players ruled out for Saturday’s matchup.
The other unavailable players were defensive back Quay’Sheed Scott, wide receiver Jayden Sellers, running back Jawarn Howell, edge rusher Kobby Sakyi-Prah, offensive lineman Josiah Thompson and offensive lineman Seth Smith.
The injury situation was particularly difficult because Sellers and Thompson had already been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
With multiple players unavailable, South Carolina had to manage its personnel carefully against Oklahoma. The absences also placed additional importance on the depth players who were called upon to fill those roles.
Matt Fuller Leaves With an Ankle Injury
South Carolina also experienced another injury concern during the Oklahoma game when running back Matt Fuller exited with an ankle problem.
Beamer provided an update, explaining that Fuller was undergoing X-rays to determine the extent of the injury.
At that stage, there was no confirmed diagnosis or timetable for his return.
Fuller’s situation added to the Gamecocks’ growing list of health concerns, although further evaluation would be necessary before determining how serious the ankle injury might be.
Arnett’s Health Remains the Biggest Concern
While South Carolina had plenty to deal with on the field against Oklahoma, Beamer’s comments about Arnett served as a reminder that football extends beyond the results of a single game.
The offensive lineman’s hospitalization was clearly concerning for the coaching staff and his teammates. Beamer’s public message reflected the support surrounding Arnett as he focuses on his health.
For now, the most important thing is Arnett’s recovery. South Carolina will hope to have positive news about his condition, while the program continues navigating its other personnel challenges.
