South Carolina Injury Update: Shane Beamer Provides Encouraging News on Matt Fuller, Jawarn Howell and Quay’Sheed Scott
South Carolina received a potentially encouraging injury update following its impressive 42–25 victory over Oklahoma, with head coach Shane Beamer providing new information about the availability of several important players.
The biggest concern involved running back Matt Fuller, who suffered a foot injury during Saturday’s game. Beamer initially feared the injury could end Fuller’s season, but Sunday’s update offered a more hopeful outlook following successful surgery.
Although Fuller is expected to miss an extended period, the estimated recovery time suggests there could still be an opportunity for him to return before the season concludes.
Beamer also addressed the status of running back Jawarn Howell and nickelback Quay’Sheed Scott, offering positive signs about their potential availability ahead of the Gamecocks’ upcoming matchup against Texas A&M.
Matt Fuller Undergoes Successful Surgery
Fuller’s injury against Oklahoma was a significant concern for South Carolina’s coaching staff.
The running back went down during the first quarter after receiving a handoff and attempting to run to the right side. He gained just one yard on the play before appearing to have his foot or leg caught in an awkward position during the tackle.
Fuller remained on the ground for several moments as medical personnel attended to him. Although he eventually got back to his feet with assistance, he immediately headed to the medical tent.
He briefly returned wearing his helmet and appeared to begin warming up, but eventually went back into the tent before making his way to the locker room.
His afternoon ended with four rushing attempts for 17 yards.
Following the game, Beamer expressed concern that the injury could keep Fuller out for the remainder of the season. However, the head coach delivered a more encouraging update during Sunday’s teleconference, confirming that the running back had undergone surgery successfully.
“Matt Fuller had successful surgery this morning; just got off the phone with him,” Beamer said Sunday evening on his teleconference. “He’s disappointed and down. It’s probably about a month rehab, so it’s not anything that’s like long, long, long term, a month rehab, maybe a little over a month potentially, but happy to hear that. The surgery went well and obviously just keep lifting Matt up, because obviously that’s a really disappointing injury for him and for us. What a great young man and was having a great season.”
The estimated recovery period is an important development for the Gamecocks. Rather than facing a potentially season-ending absence, Fuller could have a chance to return after approximately a month of rehabilitation, although the timeline remains subject to his recovery.
Beamer also made it clear that the injury is disappointing for both Fuller and the program, particularly considering the season the young running back had been putting together.
Jawarn Howell Could Return Against Texas A&M
South Carolina could receive another boost in its backfield with Jawarn Howell potentially returning to action.
Howell has missed the Gamecocks’ last two games because of a shoulder injury. However, Beamer indicated that the running back was already close to being available and that the coaching staff had chosen to give him additional recovery time.
“Jawarn’s health is good,” Beamer said. “Last week, he could have played, we just didn’t feel comfortable, he didn’t feel comfortable, going out there. We felt like we could rest him and give him another week to heal, so thankfully we didn’t need him last night. Fully expect him to be back this week.”
That is encouraging news for an offense that could benefit from additional depth at running back.
With Fuller recovering from surgery, Howell’s potential return becomes even more important. His availability would give South Carolina another experienced option as it prepares for a difficult SEC matchup.
Beamer’s comments suggest that Howell’s absence was partly precautionary, with the coaching staff preferring to allow his shoulder more time to recover rather than risk bringing him back too early.
Quay’Sheed Scott Also Nearing a Return
The Gamecocks could also strengthen their defensive secondary with the possible return of nickelback Quay’Sheed Scott.
Scott has missed the previous three games while working through his injury. Beamer previously explained that the defensive back needed to complete some final medical tests before returning to the lineup.
During Sunday’s teleconference, the head coach provided another brief update that offered optimism about Scott’s availability.
“Hopefully, we’ll get Quay’Sheed Scott back this week too,” Beamer said.
Although the comment does not guarantee Scott will play against Texas A&M, it indicates that South Carolina is hopeful about getting him back.
His return would provide another option in the secondary as the Gamecocks prepare for the Aggies’ offense.
South Carolina Turns Its Attention to Texas A&M
Following the convincing 42–25 victory over Oklahoma, South Carolina now shifts its attention to another important SEC contest.
The Gamecocks will host Texas A&M on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium, looking to build on their recent momentum.
The latest injury developments present a mixed picture for the program. Fuller will need time to recover from surgery, but Howell could return to help the running back rotation, while Scott is also working toward a possible comeback.
For Beamer and his coaching staff, the priority will be making sure each player is healthy enough to contribute without risking further injury.
The biggest takeaway is that Matt Fuller’s successful surgery and estimated month-long rehabilitation offer more hope than the initial season-ending concern. Meanwhile, the potential returns of Howell and Scott could provide timely reinforcements as South Carolina prepares for Texas A&M.
