Despite South Carolina football’s struggles and questions about coach Shane Beamer’s future, the Gamecocks’ 2027 commits say they aren’t wavering.

The backdrop

The Gamecocks are having a difficult season, and Beamer’s job security has become a major storyline. The State’s Jordan Kaye, citing sources in the university and donor communities, reported this week that the school isn’t expected to make a coaching change any time soon.

What the commits are saying

Jackson Ross, a Hammond linebacker and one of 17 commits in the 2027 class, spoke after Thursday’s win. He said, “I’m 100 percent committed to Coach Beamer and his staff,” and argued the team is only four or five plays away from a very different season. He added that his belief is with the coaches and players, and that as long as Beamer is there, that is where his heart is.

On the season itself, Ross said SEC football is tough every week, but one big win could turn things around in the locker room and the program. He believes the talent and coaching are there.

Staff contact continues: Ross said he still hears from South Carolina coaches regularly. He was on a call with the defensive staff this week, and they wished him luck before Thursday’s game.

Others echo the message

Several commits told reporters they remain committed:

  • James Ross, Ridge View offensive lineman (told The State)
  • Joshua Dobson and Davion Jones of Hough
  • DJ Huggins, receiver
  • Nate Carson, Irmo offensive lineman
  • Judah Lancaster, Brentwood Academy tight end
  • Kevin Millington, North Oconee

The others spoke to On3. Ridge View’s James Ross put it simply: “All teams have tough patches, doesn’t mean you bail.” He said he believes in what Beamer has built and is ready to work.

A united class

Jackson Ross said the commits keep in touch through a group chat, where they talk regularly about the program and its season. He said everyone is largely on the same wavelength: committed to Beamer and his staff, and wanting to play for them as long as they are there.

Ross’s big night

Ross was also in the middle of a standout senior season for Hammond (the Skyhawks), who beat Ben Lippen 37-7 on Thursday:

  • Two interceptions, with one returned for a touchdown
  • A sack
  • His fourth defensive touchdown of the season

Before the game, he had 48 tackles (14 for loss) and 4.5 sacks, and he now has four interceptions. Hammond is 8-0, has a bye next week, and is likely to be a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the SCISA 4A playoffs next month.

Ross said he feels good about his own team’s defense and that the offense is moving the ball and running it well. He said the team knows there is another step to take and is close.

Why it matters

  1. Recruiting stability. A class standing firm is a positive sign amid the criticism of Beamer.
  2. A coach’s argument. Beamer’s recruiting record is among his strongest points when his job status is debated.
  3. The risk remains. Statements of loyalty are easier to make than to keep if losses continue or the staff changes.

Note: The article refers to him as “Ross” in most quotes, which I’ve taken to mean Jackson Ross, not James Ross.
