South Carolina’s offense then went three-and-out, and another defensive stand on third-and-19 turned into a Bulldogs first down after a pass interference call, setting up a touchdown from Anthony Evans III that gave South Carolina its first deficit of the season.
Sellers’ Costly Interceptions
With the crowd urging him toward a wide-open Mazeo Bennett Jr., Sellers underthrew the pass for his first interception of the day, which Mississippi State converted into points. He threw a nearly identical second interception on the following drive, this time drawing boos from the home crowd. Beamer addressed the team’s need for composure during these swings: “This was going to be a game of momentum swings, and that when the momentum was going their way, we just needed to continue to just execute and do our job and keep playing and play with poise and confidence.”
A Disappointing Fourth Quarter
Mississippi State opened the fourth with another quick touchdown, extending the lead to 15 and completing a stretch where the Bulldogs outscored South Carolina 41-7 after trailing 16-0 — with Mississippi State’s 41 points tying the most a Gamecocks defense had allowed since a 2023 loss to Florida. Beamer expressed frustration that his team failed to capitalize on a perceived depth advantage: “This third quarter is just crazy. Going into the locker room at halftime, felt great… So there’s no reason for anybody on our defense to not be fresh going into the third quarter.”
Final Result
A late field goal cut the deficit to seven, but Mississippi State recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt and ran out the clock. The loss drops South Carolina to 2-1 and marks Beamer’s fifth loss in six SEC-opener attempts. Reflecting on the outcome, Beamer maintained: “Certainly disappointing with us and how we performed. Just told the team this moment won’t define this football team.”
