Colonial Life Arena Honors Dawn Staley With Champions Fund Celebration
Colonial Life Arena celebrated Dawn Staley on Thursday evening, with the head coach serving as guest of honor at an event supporting the Dawn Staley Champions Fund — a cause tied directly to her 18-year legacy at South Carolina, both on the court and off it.
On the court, that legacy needs little introduction: three national championships across nearly two decades leading the Gamecocks. But the celebration centered on Staley’s work beyond basketball, specifically her continued support for students through the Champions Fund.
According to South Carolina’s own description of the fund, the September 3, 2026 fundraising event, titled “A Celebration of Dawn Staley,” was designed to recognize Coach Staley’s recent achievements on and off the court, and, most importantly, it will benefit the Dawn Staley Champions Fund. The evening highlighted four specific education initiatives the fund supports: Gamecock Guarantee, the Richard T. Greener Scholarship and the Women’s Basketball Leadership Fund and CarolinaLIFE. Each program serves a distinct purpose. The Gamecock Guarantee is a need-based financial and academic support program for academically talented first-generation students from South Carolina, offering $5,000 of support per year, additional assistance such as scholarships, as well as access to programs and services that bolster their academic achievement. The Richard T. Greener Scholarship, named after the university’s first Black faculty member, provides a $2,000 four year scholarship awarded to incoming freshmen based on academic achievement, leadership ability, community service and financial need. More broadly, the fund itself is built around expanding access to education for students who might otherwise face financial barriers. Thursday’s event continues a now-annual tradition of using Staley’s platform to raise both funds and awareness for these initiatives — a mission that Staley herself has framed in deeply personal terms in past appearances, describing scholarships as a way to ensure financial barriers don’t stand between students and their potential, “regardless of their background or circumstances.”
