Freshman TE Caden Ramsey Suspended After Reckless Driving Arrest at 113 MPH
South Carolina freshman tight end Caden Ramsey has been suspended from the team following his arrest, head coach Shane Beamer confirmed September 8.
The Arrest
Ramsey was arrested September 7 in Moncks Corner and charged with racing on a public road, per the Berkeley County public index. He was booked into the Berkeley County Detention Center at 4:02 a.m., with the incident report alleging he drove as fast as 113 mph in a 60 mph zone, weaving through traffic while competing with another vehicle. The 19-year-old was granted a personal recognizance bond.
Beamer’s Response
Addressing the situation at his weekly press conference, Beamer expressed disappointment while emphasizing it was out of character: “Disappointing. That’s not his nature, knowing the young man, we’ve never had a single issue with him since he’s been here. We talked about it, you absolutely can’t do that. We’ve had plenty of conversations about driving and not driving too fast and the recklessness of that.” Beamer said he met with Ramsey the following day and came away believing the player understood the severity of his mistake: “We’ll handle it internally but for the time being he’s suspended.”

According to the report obtained by The Greenville News, a Moncks Corner officer observed two vehicles weaving in and out of traffic with “several erratic” lane changes at an estimated 110 mph in a 60 mph zone. In-car radar clocked the vehicles at 113 mph, with one aggressively passing several cars driving at the speed limit. After the officer activated lights and later sirens, the vehicles continued competing for speed side by side at 80 mph in a 55 mph zone before one turned off and slowed near a McDonald’s, where the driver was ultimately arrested. All names besides Ramsey’s were redacted from the public report.
On-Field Context
The 6-foot-5 freshman had played just six snaps in South Carolina’s 57-0 season-opening win over Kent State on September 5, and was notably named the team’s scout player of the week following that game. South Carolina continues its non-conference slate hosting Towson on Sept. 12 before opening SEC play against Mississippi State on Sept. 19.
Recruiting Background
Ramsey was a three-star signee in Beamer’s 2026 class, choosing South Carolina over Georgia Tech, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech. A Cross, South Carolina native out of Cross High School, he posted 55 catches for 778 yards and nine touchdowns, plus six rushing scores, in his senior season, totaling 115 catches, 1,903 receiving yards, and 24 touchdowns across his high school career. He joined the program in the summer rather than enrolling early in January.
A Pattern of Off-Field Issues
Ramsey’s arrest marks the third known arrest for a South Carolina football player in 2026. In June, Beamer dismissed transfer running back Sam Williams-Dixon following his arrest on three counts of breaking into a motor vehicle, three counts of criminal conspiracy, and one count of grand larceny. Earlier in the year, defensive tackle Davonte Miles was arrested February 10 during a traffic stop on a charge of possession with intent to distribute marijuana; South Carolina announced two days later that Miles was no longer with the team.
