Duke men’s basketball is preparing for its first major early-season test as the No. 2 Blue Devils face No. 6 Michigan State in the 2026 State Farm Champions Classic in Chicago, Illinois.

Jon Scheyer’s team has started the season impressively, winning its first two regular-season games by convincing margins. But Michigan State presents a much tougher challenge, with experienced guards, physical defense and the ability to compete with elite opponents.

The matchup will give Duke an early opportunity to demonstrate whether its talented roster can translate its dominant opening performances into success against a nationally ranked opponent.

Duke’s current form: The Blue Devils are off to a flying start

2–0 record

Duke has opened the 2026–27 campaign with two impressive victories:

OpponentResult
ArmyDuke won 84–50
Coastal CarolinaDuke won 113–52

The Blue Devils have scored 197 points across their first two regular-season games, winning by an average margin of 47.5 points.

Here are four important strengths to watch.

1. Patrick Ngongba II’s growing offensive confidence

Ngongba delivered a career-high 28 points against Coastal Carolina, demonstrating his ability to score around the basket and stretch the floor. His performance gives Duke another major offensive weapon.

2. Dame Sarr’s two-way impact

Sarr has emerged as an important contributor. His defensive instincts, athleticism and ability to score in transition make him especially valuable against a team with Michigan State’s experienced backcourt.

3. John Blackwell brings experience and scoring

The Wisconsin transfer has already shown that he can contribute offensively. His 15-point performance against Coastal Carolina gives Duke another player capable of taking over stretches of a game.

4. Duke’s depth is becoming a major advantage

Caleb Foster, Cayden Boozer, Deron Rippey Jr. and the other young Blue Devils have opportunities to contribute. Duke’s ability to receive production from its bench could become important against Michigan State’s physical defense.

Michigan State is coming in with confidence

Duke should not expect another comfortable victory.

Michigan State improved to 2–0 after defeating Toledo 91–61 on November 6. The Spartans controlled the game with a strong defensive performance and dominated the rebounding battle, 52–27.

Freshman Jasiah Jervis led the Spartans with 16 points, while Jeremy Fears Jr. contributed 12 points and nine assists. Jordan Scott added 12 points and nine rebounds, and Coen Carr scored 10.

Michigan State shot 56% in the first half and limited Toledo to just 25% shooting over that same period. Reuters

The biggest player to watch is Jeremy Fears Jr. His ability to control the pace, create opportunities for teammates and pressure opposing defenses could test Duke’s guards.

Series history: Duke has the advantage

Duke and Michigan State have a long history of meeting in important games.

The all-time series record is reported as Duke 16 wins, Michigan State 4 wins. In Michigan State’s official historical records covering meetings since December 2010, the Spartans have two wins against 11 losses.

Some notable meetings include:

  • December 2020: Michigan State defeated Duke 75–69 in Durham.
  • November 2023: Duke defeated Michigan State 74–65 in Chicago.
  • December 2025: Duke defeated Michigan State 66–60 in East Lansing.

The December 2025 meeting was particularly important because it showed Duke’s ability to win a competitive game against the Spartans on their home floor. Michigan State University Athletics +1

The 2026 meeting gives both programs another opportunity to make a statement in one of college basketball’s biggest early-season events.

What Duke must do to win

Control the backcourt battle. Duke must prevent Fears from comfortably directing Michigan State’s offense. Applying pressure without giving up easy driving lanes will be important.

Win the rebounding battle. Michigan State showed against Toledo that it can dominate the boards. Ngongba and Duke’s forwards must be aggressive on both ends.

Get production beyond Ngongba. Duke cannot depend on one player to carry the offense. Blackwell, Sarr, Boozer and Foster must contribute consistently.

Take care of the basketball. Duke committed 11 first-half turnovers against Coastal Carolina despite winning comfortably. Against Michigan State, careless possessions could become much more costly.

Prediction: Can Duke pass its first major test?

This is a much better measuring stick for Scheyer’s team than its opening two games.

Duke has the offensive talent, depth and athleticism to win. Ngongba’s emergence is particularly encouraging, while Sarr and Blackwell give the Blue Devils additional scoring options.

Michigan State, however, has a dangerous playmaker in Fears and demonstrated against Toledo that it can defend, rebound and create separation.

I expect a more competitive contest than Duke’s first two games, but the Blue Devils’ offensive depth and ability to score at multiple positions could give them the advantage.

The bottom line: This is the kind of game Duke needs to win if it wants to establish itself as a genuine national championship contender. Michigan State will provide a much stronger test, and how the Blue Devils respond could reveal a lot about their potential this season.
