North Carolina could have an important frontcourt concern heading into Sunday’s highly anticipated matchup against No. 1 South Carolina.

The biggest name to watch is senior forward Ciera Toomey, who missed North Carolina’s season opener against Oklahoma in Paris on November 2 after also being unavailable for the team’s preseason exhibition games.

Her absence is particularly significant because South Carolina has the size, physicality and frontcourt depth to make life difficult for opponents.

Ciera Toomey’s Potential Absence Could Be a Major Problem

If Toomey is unavailable against South Carolina, North Carolina could face a difficult challenge in the frontcourt.

The Gamecocks have the physicality and athleticism to attack the paint, compete aggressively for rebounds and put pressure on opposing post players. Losing a 6-foot-4 veteran who averaged 6.2 rebounds and recorded 53 blocks last season would take away an important defensive presence.

1. Rebounding becomes a bigger concern

South Carolina can make opponents pay when they struggle to secure defensive rebounds. Without Toomey, North Carolina could have to rely more heavily on Achol Akot, Sophie Burrows and its other frontcourt options to keep the Gamecocks from dominating the glass.

2. Rim protection could suffer

Toomey’s 53 blocks last season demonstrate the value she brings as a defensive presence near the basket. Against South Carolina’s interior attack, her absence could leave additional responsibility on the remaining forwards and centers.

3. More pressure on Achol Akot

Akot could become even more important if Toomey cannot play. Her ability to score inside, rebound and defend stronger opponents will be tested against South Carolina’s frontcourt.

4. Courtney Banghart may need to adjust her rotation

North Carolina could turn to Blanca Thomas and freshman Noelle Bofia for additional frontcourt minutes. That would give them an opportunity to contribute, but facing South Carolina’s physicality would be a demanding assignment.

The Bottom Line

North Carolina has enough talent to make Sunday’s matchup competitive, particularly with Kate Harpring, Nyla Brooks and Reniya Kelly providing offensive options.

However, if Ciera Toomey is unavailable, the Tar Heels could be vulnerable in the paint and on the defensive glass.

South Carolina will undoubtedly look to exploit any weakness around the basket. For Banghart, having her experienced forward available could make a meaningful difference in how North Carolina handles the Gamecocks’ physical approach.
