New Details Emerge in Caden Ramsey’s Arrest: 113 MPH, Additional Vehicles, Firearms Found
Newly obtained police records reveal further details about the arrest of South Carolina freshman tight end Caden Ramsey, who was taken into custody early Monday morning in Berkeley County on a charge of racing on a public road — with the report confirming Ramsey was clocked at 113 mph.
Beamer and Attorney Respond
Head coach Shane Beamer addressed the situation with clear disappointment, while noting it didn’t reflect Ramsey’s character during his time in the program: “Extremely disappointing. That’s not his nature, knowing the young man. We’ve never had a single issue with him since he’s been here. He understands he made a mistake and we’ll handle it internally.”
Ramsey’s attorney, Seth Rose, issued a statement to The State pushing back against assumptions of guilt: “Caden is a good young man and a dedicated student-athlete with a bright future. This is a pending citation, not a finding of guilt.”
What the Police Report Describes
According to the report, the arresting officer from the Moncks Corner Police Department said he witnessed two vehicles at midnight “weaving in and out of traffic, making several erratic lane changes, and traveling at an estimated 110 mph” in a 60 mph zone. Using in-car radar, the officer clocked the vehicles at 113 mph, describing how one “navigate[d] through traffic and pass[ed] several vehicles travelling at the speed limit in an aggressive manner.”
The report further detailed that as the cars passed the officer’s location, he observed them “competing for speed,” at one point traveling side-by-side at 80 mph in a 50-mph zone. When the officer activated his lights and siren, one vehicle continued north on Highway 52 while the other stopped at a nearby McDonald’s, where that driver — later identified as Ramsey — was arrested and handcuffed.
Ramsey’s Cooperation
Though both drivers’ names were redacted in the official report, attorney Rose confirmed Ramsey’s conduct during the stop: “Caden pulled over immediately and was very polite to the officer.”
A More Complicated Scene Unfolds
The situation escalated shortly after the initial arrest, as three additional vehicles arrived and parked near the McDonald’s — one of which was the car that had continued north on Highway 52 during the pursuit. That driver was also arrested. Notably, one of the individuals at the scene, who claimed to have just turned 21 (Ramsey is 19), was found with two pistols under the driver’s seat, including one equipped with a “full auto conversion device.”
Rose was careful to distance Ramsey from that aspect of the incident: “[Ramsey] was not under the influence and had no firearm. We ask that people not rush to judgment while this matter is resolved.”
Ramsey’s Football Background
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound tight end hails from Cross High School, located within Berkeley County itself. He played six snaps in South Carolina’s season-opening win over Kent State, a performance that earned him recognition afterward — Beamer had specifically praised his development, naming him one of USC’s Scout Team Offensive Players of the Week.
