Owen Scheihing Undergoes Successful Surgery After Injury at South Carolina
Towson punter Owen Scheihing has undergone successful surgery on his left arm following an unfortunate injury during the Tigers’ 45–9 loss to South Carolina on Saturday. Despite the setback, the sophomore has expressed gratitude toward both Towson and South Carolina’s medical staff while maintaining a positive outlook about his recovery.
Injury Occurs During Vicari Swain’s Punt Return
The injury happened during the final play of the third quarter at Williams-Brice Stadium. South Carolina cornerback and punt returner Vicari Swain broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown, his second punt return score of the game.
As Swain approached the end zone, Scheihing attempted to make a low tackle near the returner’s legs. Swain tried to hurdle the punter, but the two players collided in the air. Swain’s knee struck Scheihing’s helmet, causing the Towson player to fall awkwardly onto his left arm.
Scheihing was subsequently placed in an air cast and carted off the field. The incident briefly overshadowed an otherwise dominant performance by the Gamecocks.
Successful Surgery and Appreciation for Medical Staff
Scheihing confirmed on social media that his surgery was successful at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. He specifically praised the quick assistance he received from the training staffs of both schools.

His comments highlight the importance of prompt medical attention during potentially serious sports injuries. The cooperation between the two programs also demonstrated the value of player welfare beyond the competition itself.
No Hard Feelings Toward Vicari Swain
Although Swain’s attempt to hurdle Scheihing contributed to the awkward collision, there appears to be no animosity between the two players. Scheihing publicly acknowledged Swain’s outreach and expressed appreciation for the South Carolina player’s concern.

Towson head coach Pete Shinnick described the injury as “extremely unfortunate” but said Scheihing remained in “great spirits.” He explained that the injury resulted from an awkward landing combined with contact during the play.
“Really just an awkward landing, and then he got hit at the same time,” Shinnick said. “… Owen’s one of the great guys on our team, a really awesome teammate.”
Shinnick also praised South Carolina’s response, calling the outreach from Swain and Beamer a “class act.” He said Scheihing appreciated the gestures and viewed them as a meaningful sign of respect.
Looking Ahead to Recovery
Scheihing was able to travel home with the Towson team after Saturday’s game before undergoing surgery Sunday. Although his recovery timeline remains unclear, the young punter has made it clear that he wants to return to the field.
“Appreciate all the well wishes and support and focused on taking the field soon with my Towson teammates!” he wrote.
The injury is a difficult setback during Scheihing’s first season as Towson’s starting punter. Nevertheless, his positive attitude, the support of his teammates, and the goodwill shown by South Carolina provide encouragement as he begins rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, South Carolina moves forward at 2–0 and prepares to host Mississippi State in its SEC opener.
