South Carolina Adds an HBCU Showcase to a Loaded 2026-27 Schedule — Here’s What’s Confirmed So Far

South Carolina will participate in the PowHER Player Classic this November, a new event featuring three HBCUs — the latest piece of a 2026-27 schedule that’s still filling in around the edges even as several marquee matchups are already locked.

A new event still short on details

Rae Rose Media, the marketing agency behind past South Carolina NIL projects like the NCAA selection watch party, teased the event on July 21. The agency has also worked on NIL initiatives with Cal’s women’s basketball program, giving it a track record in this specific space. The event is being billed as an “HBCU Women’s Basketball Tournament and NIL Marketplace,” set to take place in Columbia sometime in November — though the exact date, venue, and matchup format all remain unannounced.

The teaser graphic itself offered more questions than answers, featuring four blurred-out logos. Two are identifiable: South Carolina’s own logo and Tennessee State’s. That Tennessee State connection carries real basketball pedigree — the program is coached by Candice Dupree, a WNBA great who played under Dawn Staley at Temple, giving this matchup a built-in mentorship storyline even before a single detail about format is announced. (Former Gamecock Ashley Bruner was on Tennessee State’s staff last season but wasn’t retained, adding another loose Gamecock thread to the event.) A third logo appears to be Alabama A&M, while a fourth is difficult to make out but might be NC Central. Until South Carolina releases full details, this remains more of a save-the-date than a fleshed-out event.

The non-conference schedule already taking shape

Outside the HBCU event, South Carolina has five non-conference games with opponents and dates already locked in: a November 2 matchup against Maryland in Paris, a November 15 game against Southern Cal in Greenville, a November 21 road trip to Providence, a November 24 date with UConn in Uncasville, Connecticut, and a December 3 road game at Duke. That’s a genuinely demanding slate before conference play even begins — international travel, a marquee UConn rematch, and true road games against ACC and Big East competition all within the first month of the season.

South Carolina has also confirmed it will face North Carolina in Charlotte as part of the Ally Tipoff, though the exact date hasn’t been set. Given that previous Ally Tipoffs have landed in the first week or two of the season, that game is likely to be one of South Carolina’s earliest tests. The Gamecocks’ annual rivalry game against Clemson rounds out the known non-conference commitments.

Unresolved questions around the Players Era Championship

One notable gap remains the Players Era Championship. Last November, Staley confirmed South Carolina would return to the event for two more seasons, and last year’s version consisted of two games. Rumors circulating in Las Vegas during the event suggested the format could expand to at least three games next season, possibly with additional teams involved — but nothing has been made official. The tournament’s organizers have already announced teams, dates and broadcast details for the 2026 men’s event, along with an entirely new volleyball event, yet the women’s event details remain unreleased (notably, they did fix a website typo in June, which at least confirms the page is being maintained). Until organizers confirm specifics, this remains the most significant open question on South Carolina’s schedule.

A loaded SEC slate, with a rivalry renewed

On the conference side, Oklahoma returns as South Carolina’s home-and-home opponent for the season — a rematch with real stakes given last year’s history between the two programs. The Sooners handed the SEC champion Gamecocks their only regular-season conference loss last year, but South Carolina got its revenge in the Sweet 16, making this year’s home-and-home a continuation of a rivalry that’s already produced real drama on both ends.

Based on the conference’s alternating home-and-away structure, South Carolina’s home opponents this season are Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, LSU and Texas A&M, while the road slate includes Georgia, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas and Vanderbilt. The SEC season itself begins December 31, though specific dates and tip times are still to be announced.

That scheduling framework has been in place since the 2024-25 season, when Oklahoma and Texas joined the conference: every team plays each other once, plus one home-and-home series per season. South Carolina’s home-and-home opponents in the two seasons since that format began were Texas in 2025 and Alabama last season, which makes Oklahoma the natural next rotation. Since the remaining 14 SEC opponents simply alternate home and away year over year, this year’s location assignments were largely predictable well in advance.

Return games still owed on both ends

A few contractual obligations round out the picture. FGCU is set to play a return game in Columbia this season, despite earlier suggestions that last year’s meeting was intended as a standalone game — a reversal worth noting given how initial billing framed it. South Carolina is also contracted to play at Providence as the return leg of last season’s matchup. On the other side of the ledger, South Carolina still owes return games to both Penn State and Grand Canyon for games hosted in Columbia last season, with those return trips expected during the 2027-28 season rather than this upcoming one.
