South Carolina delivered another impressive performance on Saturday, overwhelming Oklahoma 42-25 at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium to secure its third consecutive SEC victory.

The Sooners struggled so badly offensively that their performance brought back memories of South Carolina’s own difficult offensive seasons. Given Oklahoma’s inability to consistently move the football, the final result was hardly surprising.

The victory improves the Gamecocks to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in SEC play. After opening the season with a disappointing 2-3 record and losing their first three conference games, Shane Beamer’s team has completely changed its momentum.

South Carolina is now just one win away from becoming bowl eligible, while the possibility of finishing the regular season with nine victories is becoming increasingly realistic.

South Carolina Controlled the Game From the Beginning

There was little doubt about which team was more dominant throughout Saturday’s contest.

Oklahoma’s offensive struggles were particularly evident during the opening half. By halftime, the Sooners had accumulated 54 penalty yards compared with only 71 yards of total offense. Their inability to sustain drives made it extremely difficult to challenge South Carolina.

The Gamecocks did have their own mistakes, losing the turnover battle 3-0. One of those turnovers came when LaNorris Sellers threw an interception that Oklahoma returned for a touchdown.

However, those mistakes never seriously threatened South Carolina’s control of the matchup.

The Gamecocks’ defense consistently limited Oklahoma’s opportunities, and the Sooners struggled to generate meaningful offense until quarterback John Mateer connected on two fourth-quarter touchdown passes.

Considering Oklahoma’s offensive limitations, South Carolina appeared to need only around 20 points to put itself in a strong position. The Sooners had struggled to score consistently throughout the season, and the Gamecocks took advantage of that weakness.

They reached 21 points in less than 21 minutes, creating a comfortable advantage early in the contest.

Sellers and DJ Black Produce a Spectacular 84-Yard Touchdown

One of the biggest moments arrived early in the second quarter.

Facing third-and-12, Sellers stepped forward in the pocket and delivered a spectacular deep pass to DJ Black. The receiver gathered the ball downfield and completed an 84-yard touchdown reception, the longest passing play in the SEC this season.

The throw traveled approximately 57 yards through the air before dropping perfectly into Black’s hands.

It was an outstanding demonstration of Sellers’ arm talent and ability to make difficult throws look relatively effortless.

The touchdown gave South Carolina another major boost and further exposed Oklahoma’s defensive difficulties.

Sellers Delivers Another Highlight With Mazeo Bennett

Sellers saved another remarkable play for the fourth quarter.

With the outcome already heavily favoring South Carolina, the Gamecocks faced third-and-9. Sellers scrambled out of the pocket and moved toward the left sideline.

At first, it appeared he would simply gain a few yards before sliding to keep the clock moving. Instead, he spotted Mazeo Bennett running downfield and made an extraordinary decision.

Sellers adjusted his body and launched a pass nearly 50 yards downfield. Bennett caught the football in stride and raced into the end zone for a 79-yard touchdown.

It was another outstanding connection that highlighted the quarterback’s ability to create explosive plays even when a passing opportunity initially appeared unlikely.

Sellers finished the afternoon with an exceptional statistical performance:

  • 19 completions on 24 attempts (79%).
  • 301 passing yards.
  • Three passing touchdowns.
  • 13 rushing attempts for 96 yards.
  • Two rushing touchdowns.

He accounted for five total touchdowns, making him the central figure in South Carolina’s offensive success.

Gamecocks Finish With 521 Total Yards

South Carolina’s offensive production extended well beyond its quarterback.

The Gamecocks accumulated 521 total yards, an impressive performance against a defense led by Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables.

That number becomes even more significant when compared with South Carolina’s previous two meetings against Venables’ Oklahoma defense. Across those matchups, the Gamecocks had managed only 478 total yards.

This time, they surpassed that combined figure in a single game.

Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles deserves considerable credit for the team’s performance. While Oklahoma supporters were expressing frustration with their offensive coordinator, South Carolina’s offensive approach was producing explosive plays and consistently putting pressure on the Sooners.

Briles’ game plan helped Sellers find opportunities downfield, while the Gamecocks took full advantage of their athletic advantages.

South Carolina’s Resurgence Is Becoming Difficult to Ignore

The Gamecocks have looked like a different team since their impressive performance against Florida in the Swamp, where they defeated the then-No. 16 Gators.

They followed that result with a victory over No. 11 Tennessee before traveling to Oklahoma and producing another convincing win.

Three consecutive SEC victories have completely changed the conversation surrounding South Carolina’s season.

A team that began conference play with three straight losses is now showing the ability to compete against some of the league’s strongest opponents.

The Gamecocks have demonstrated improved offensive execution, explosive playmaking and the defensive ability to control games against struggling offenses.

There is also an intriguing possibility regarding their postseason ambitions. Had South Carolina avoided one more defeat earlier in the season, its position in the College Football Playoff conversation could look considerably different.

Even now, with Georgia still remaining on the schedule and several SEC teams potentially finishing with multiple conference losses, the broader postseason picture is not necessarily settled.

Of course, there is still plenty of work to do before those possibilities become reality.

Gamecocks Have Plenty to Celebrate

For now, South Carolina can enjoy what has been an impressive turnaround.

The Gamecocks have moved from a disappointing start to a team that has won three straight conference games, defeated two ranked opponents during this stretch and produced a dominant road performance against Oklahoma.

The 42-25 victory is another major statement for Beamer’s program.

With bowl eligibility within reach and a more confident offense led by Sellers, South Carolina has given its supporters plenty of reasons to believe the season could finish on a much stronger note.

The Gamecocks can enjoy their Halloween victory. Their resurgence is becoming one of the most encouraging developments of the season.
