South Carolina Tie Goes International: Ayla McDowell Named to Brazil’s Preliminary AmericupW Roster
South Carolina’s international footprint just expanded, as Ayla McDowell has been named to the Brazilian women’s national team’s preliminary roster for the South American Qualifier of the AmericupW.
The broader roster picture
McDowell’s selection comes as part of a larger preliminary pool. Brazil’s national team, led by head coach Pokey Chatman, has defined a broad list of 20 athletes ahead of the qualifying tournament in Zárate, Argentina, running August 3-9. From that group of 20, only 12 players will ultimately be selected for the tournament roster — meaning McDowell’s inclusion here is a meaningful step, but not yet a guarantee of a spot in the competition itself.
One notable wrinkle in the selection process is worth flagging: players involved in the Women’s Basketball League finals will not be available for selection, with that determination still to be finalized in the coming weeks. That detail adds a layer of uncertainty to the final 12-player roster, since it isn’t yet clear how many of the 20 preliminary athletes will even be eligible once league commitments are factored in — a dynamic that could work in McDowell’s favor if she isn’t tied up in a competing finals series.
A stacked qualifying field
The tournament itself carries real stakes. Seven countries will compete in Zárate: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. Following a draw held Tuesday, July 14, Brazil was placed in Group B alongside Venezuela and Chile.

The format rewards early success significantly. Teams will first play within their groups, with the top-placed team in each group advancing directly to the semifinals — no additional games required. The second- and third-place teams, however, will have to compete for the remaining right to advance to the semifinal. That semifinal berth carries an added incentive beyond this tournament alone: it also secures a spot in the 2027 AmericupW, as the competition’s top four finishers overall will qualify for the continental tournament set to be held in El Salvador.
What this means for McDowell
For McDowell, a preliminary roster spot represents a real opportunity to compete for international minutes on a continental stage, with a direct path to a larger tournament next year if Brazil performs well. The structure of the qualifier — where a strong group-stage finish can bypass an extra knockout game entirely — means the stakes of Brazil’s three group games against Venezuela and Chile will be significant from the outset, assuming McDowell makes the final 12-player cut.
Dates, times and further competition details are expected to be announced soon, which should also bring clarity on the final tournament roster once the availability of Women’s Basketball League finalists is sorted out.
