South Carolina’s Season Opener Doubles as Major Recruiting Showcase
Beyond the on-field goal of opening the season 1-0 against Kent State, Saturday’s home opener carries significant weight for South Carolina’s recruiting efforts, with several verbal commits and top targets confirmed to attend Williams-Brice Stadium.
Headlining the visitor list is five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, the highest-rated recruit in South Carolina’s 2027 class, who confirmed his attendance on social media, writing, “Let’s goooooo i’m back at home this weekend.” Dobson’s commitment in early July was a signature moment for the class, effectively putting the Gamecocks’ 2027 recruiting on the map.
Several other 2027 verbal commits are also expected in Columbia, including four-star receiver Iveon Lewis, offensive tackle Nate Carson, and cornerback Kelvin Millington, along with three-star prospects defensive end Jayden Broadie and receiver DJ Huggins.
On the target side, Alpharetta offensive lineman Calvin Landry — who holds offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Georgia Tech — will be on hand, giving South Carolina a chance to make an in-person impression against several other blue-blood programs vying for his commitment.
The visitor list also includes notable 2028 targets, led by five-star EDGE rusher Cassell Cruickshank out of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and four-star receiver Zyon Robinson, the No. 16 overall player in Georgia and No. 19 receiver nationally for his class. Cruickshank’s presence is particularly significant given his status as the top-ranked recruit in North Carolina, a state that has historically produced strong recruiting results for South Carolina.
This recruiting weekend builds on real momentum from the summer. Beamer’s staff had a standout July, landing not just Dobson but also four-star safety Davion Jones — Dobson’s teammate at Hough High School — along with Nate Carson. The Gamecocks also flipped Iveon Lewis from Kentucky and beat out Virginia Tech for Kelvin Millington’s commitment. That stretch has helped push South Carolina’s 2027 class to 30th nationally and 12th in the 247Sports Composite rankings, while the developing 2028 class already includes names like wide receivers Joseph “Jett” Gibbs and Jhamari Cain.
With several other verbal commits and targets likely to attend without having publicly confirmed, Saturday’s game represents just the opening act of what’s shaping up to be an active recruiting stretch for Beamer’s program as the season gets underway.
