South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer offered a reassuring update Sunday on several players who missed time during the Gamecocks’ Week 2 win over Towson, indicating no serious long-term issues despite multiple players being sidelined or leaving the game early.

The Weekend’s Injury Situations

Wide receiver DJ Black was held out of the game due to a minor tissue issue, while tight end Maurice Brown exited early with a bruise, and center Carter Miller dealt with muscle tightness in his back. Addressing all three situations Sunday, Beamer struck an optimistic tone: “As you guys know, we have an SEC availability report that we’ll release on Wednesday, but coming out of last night, no long-term concerns. All of the guys that didn’t play last night or the guys that left the game last night, I wouldn’t say that they’re 100 percent today, but certainly optimistic that they’ll be in good shape come Saturday. Nothing is more serious today than what we thought it was last night; we’ve just got to get them healed.”

Progress for Peak and Stewart

Beamer also touched on the continued recoveries of two significant returning contributors, Jacarrius Peak and Dylan Stewart, both of whom he’d previously expressed hope could return for this week’s game against Mississippi State. His latest update remained encouraging without offering a firm commitment: “We’ll see where they are as the week goes. But they’re certainly trending in the right direction.”

A Growing List of Season-Ending Losses

Beyond the newer injury notes, South Carolina has already absorbed several significant losses this season. Wide receiver Jackson Repp is out for the year, and offensive tackle Josiah Thompson is likely done for the season as well. The receiver room took an additional hit during preseason camp, with Jayden Sellers and Jayden Gibson both lost for the year. Reserve linebackers AJ Holloway and Josh Smith have also been sidelined with injuries.

Stewart’s Track Record

Entering his junior season, Dylan Stewart brings a strong résumé to the field whenever he returns — 56 career tackles, including 22.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and 6 forced fumbles. Last season, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound edge rusher appeared in 11 games, finishing with 33 tackles and 4.5 sacks, though a back injury limited his effectiveness for much of the second half of the year.

Peak’s Background

Jacarrius Peak, a redshirt senior transfer from NC State, spent four seasons with the Wolfpack, appearing in 38 games with 32 starts and logging more than 2,200 snaps after redshirting as a freshman in 2022. He arrives at South Carolina with starting experience at both tackle spots — 14 starts at left tackle and 18 at right tackle — and entered this offseason’s transfer portal cycle ranked as the No. 1 offensive tackle and No. 3 overall transfer prospect, per On3. Shortly after transferring, the 6-foot-4, 305-pound lineman suffered a knee injury playing basketball during a team event in February, which kept him out of all spring practice.

Looking Ahead

With South Carolina set to open SEC play against Mississippi State, all eyes remain on whether Peak and Stewart can make their season debuts, while the minor bumps and bruises from the Towson game appear unlikely to significantly impact the roster heading into the conference opener.
